It is now generally accepted that in most African countries, the magnitude and extent of economic growth and development is critically determined by enhanced productivity and expanded production of food crops. The continent has always had and will continue to have a comparative advantage In food crops production what this means is that any effort at achieving an adequate rate of food production to meet and exceed population growth rate, will not only coincide with greater food production In the continent but would also result In greater self-sufficiency In food supply. The purpose of this paper is to examine the important role that agricultural production subsidies and other price support measures can play in the continent's stated objective of attaining food self-sufficiency.
