This 1989-1990 edition of the Survey of Economic and Social Conditions in Africa follows broadly the same plan as Its predecessors. After covering the international economic situation and its repercussions on developing Africa, the Survey discusses overall economic conditions in the region in 1990 and the prospects for 1991. It analyses changes in development policies, merchandise trade, foreign debt and resource flows. It examines fiscal and monetary developments and the inflation of consumer prices. It then moves on to a review of the main sectors of the economy: agriculture, energy and mining, manufacturing industry, and transport and communications. A final chapter deals with social issues and a statistical annex presents available data on the main economic and social variables.
