Report of UNECA-MRAG advisory mission on IGADD energy cooperation strategy

Abstract

Concerned to relieve the destructive pressure on ecosystems which is considered to arise from the heavy dependence on wood based energy in the sub region, the September 1992 IGADD Forth Summit resolved that in implementing IGADD’s 5-year programme of work, priority be given to promotion of substitutes for household fuel wood. To this end, it directed that endowments such as hydro and solar energy resources abundant in the sub region be developed to provide household electric energy. The directive was further reinforced by the expression of strong support and commitment to regional cooperation in energy and environment in the summit declaration.
