The most important and strongest document in the area is the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). The binding commitments of CEDAW were reaffirmed in the equally important Beijing Declaration of 1995, and its Action Plan the Platform for Action 1995. In Beijing, governments reaffirmed their commitments to strengthen equality between women and men, identifying 12 critical areas of concern to this cause. The Beijing also adopted the strategy for gender mainstreaming as the overall approach to reach the objective of gender equality.
