Agricultural credit and the mobilization of resources in rural areas

Abstract

The only region of the world where per capita food production has consistently declined over the last two decades is sub –Saharan Africa. Per capita food production fell off at an average annual rate of 0.9 between 1967 and 1982 (99, p.25), even before the most devastating drought in living memory among some 27 countries together accounting for 32.6% (182 million people) of the total population of the region. The average African, who depends for his livelihood on agriculture, is poorer today than he was in 1970.
