The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) which was held in Rio de Janiero in 1992 was milestone that laid the ground rules for policy-makers of the world to ensure harmony between development and the environment for attaining sustainable development. The Rio Conference formulated comprehensive plan of action for sustainable development which is known as the Rio Declaration or Agenda 21.
