In this paper, we: A) carry out an analysis of African policies and strategies in the mining sector during the 1980s. This analysis is made from the standpoints of ownership of mining projects/ventures and of the fiscal regime applied in the mining industry. B) review the current changes in these policies and strategies, as well as the factors which induced these changes, and; C) make some preliminary remarks on privatization in the African mining sector.
