Draft report: Nineteenth Session of the Commission and Tenth meeting of the Conference of Ministers

Abstract

The Conference of ministers had at the present session to grapple with the current problems of Africa and to make feasible recommendations for consideration by the Economic and Social Council at its second regular session of 1984, by Governments and by the international community as a whole. The most urgent problem facing Africa was the unprecedented food crisis. Twenty years ago Africa was self-sufficient in food. Food, and agricultural production generally, had since declined, while population growth had continued. The gap between supply of, and demand for, food had widened.
