The main objective of development in Africa is the reduction of poverty- an objective that was reaffirmed in Copenhagen in 1995 at the Social Summit, which set a target of reducing poverty by half by the year 2015. For Africa to achieve this goal, a minimum real Gross Domestic Product growth rate of 7 per cent per annum is required, as well as balanced policies to address specific issues, such as income distribution and labour absorbing methods of production, bearing in mind the multidimensional nature of poverty.
