There is growing evidence of a positive relationship between capital markets development and economic growth. This is because well-functioning financial markets allow for channeling of funds for most productive uses and training in risk capital which has been a the heart of growth of the corporate sector in advanced economies. The development of capital markets in Africa must be viewed in the broader context to include not only the stock market but the entire system of financial services, such as banking and insurance. The overall performance of financial and capital markets and their role in providing venture capital is increasingly acknowledged in Africa. As African capital markets gain depth and liquidity, through first improving financial infrastructure and regulatory system, the continent will increasingly be positioned on the world map for investments.
