In the East and Central African countries covered by this
analysis, cereals furnish 60-75% of total calory supply. In 1967,
the total area under cereals was 109,000,000 hectares; with total
production of about 17,000,000 tons, the average, yield was about, 900
kilo's per hectare. Other important food crops are grain leg \llDes,
especially valuable as protein producers, grown On 3.5 million
hectares, with a total output of 2,000,000 tone, as well as root
crops grown on about the same area, with a total production of 21.8
million tons.
