Résumé
With the coming of independence to most African countries in the 1960s came the move towards more rapid economic development. African countries began to be more aware than they ever were before of the urgent need for an effective and co-ordinated strategy aimed at transforming the structure of their economies, and accelerating the rate of economic growth. They began to appreciate the fact that planning and sustained economic and social development in the twentieth century required inputs, of current objective quantitative information, the effective production and utilization of which required the establishment and/or improvement of statistical services.
