The impact of economic crisis on the performance and productivity of the public service in Africa could be appraised from the trend of several factors including the motivation of public service personnel. The prevalent shortage of essential commodities, especially food and social welfare items, has adversely affected both private and public sector employees as well as the whole population. Public sector employees, tend to spend more time in search of the wherewithal to feed themselves and their families and less time on the public service jobs for which they are employed. The result is that there has been all-round deterioration in the productivity of the whole society.
