In order to assess user needs for development information in Africa, in 1990 ECA/PADIS commissioned two independent studies on this topic, both of which were completed in 1991. The first was undertaken in 23 francophone African countries, while the latter concentrated on three countries of the North Africa subregion. In order to obtain comparative results, both studies followed a similar research methodology to that of a previous study, undertaken in 1989 in Ethiopia, Nigeria and Zimbabwe. * The study of francophone countries was financed jointly by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), while the study of North African countries was financed by UNDP alone.
