The present position of the African region concerning the avail ability of accurate fertility and mortality data is highlighted by the fact that for the crude birth rate, complete registration statistics cover only 3 per cent of the total population of the region. Estimates obtained from ad hoc demographic sample surveys cover 36 per cent of the population (adjusted survey estimates are available, computed on basis of comparison of the total and the cumulative current fertility data, for 22 per cent of the population, and on basis of recall analysis for 3 per cent of the population).
