The critical social situation in Africa : an annex to the 1989 report on the world social situation

Abstract

This present report has been prepared by the secretariat of the ECA as an Annex to the 1989 Report on the World Social Situation, pursuant to the above-cited resolution of the ECOSOC. It reviews and analyses in sections II through V the trends in economic crisis and social deterioration as manifested particularly in the areas of employment! Incomes, food and nutrition, health and education. Section VI analyses the pervasive social effects of apartheid and destabilization perpetrated by the Pretoria regime on the peoples and States of Southern Africa and of other regional conflicts. Section VII draws the major conclusions from the preceding analyses and indicates the important new directions for efforts toward sustained social progress and human-focused development in Africa.
