The mechanism for the collection of conventional fertility data namely a through and ongoing system for the registration of births and deaths is absent in Sierra Leone ,although the registration of vital events has been performed for a long time now in the Western area which includes Freetown the capital and by far the largest urban centre yet for the rest of the country its performance has on the whole been fragmentary even in Freetown and more so its surroundings of these events
