The paper deals on the levels and trends of fertility in the countries of Africa. Of all the major developing regions Africa, unfortunately, is most deficient in data with respect to fertility. According to a recent United Nations study l/, only four countries (Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritius and Reunion) out of the forty-nine countries in Africa with 250,000 population. or more are classified as having complete birth registration statistics Three other countries (Egypt, Libyan Arab Republic and Madagascar) are judged to have incomplete birth registration data "not so deficient as to be useless for identifying trends".
