Domestic trade has never played a significant role in the Ethiopian economy essentially because production has been a serious constraint., Prior to 1880 most of the territory of Ethiopia was made up of tbe northern provinces. Since these provinces exhibit stellar physical features and climate, agricultural production, the only important production activity, could not be diversified and thus induce trade. Also the absence of currency as medium of exchange aggravated the situation. Since 1830 some progress has been made within the rational territory. This enhancer! the trade potential especially since coffee prow there. The forerunner of the present currency and banking system emerge3 and enhanced, among others domestic trade
