The present study is the first to he undertaken as part of a continuing project whose purpose is to examine the existing trade patterns, commercial policies and other relevant factors and thus to determine immediate steps which might be taken to increase intra-trade in the four African sub-regions and in the region as a whole. Limitations of time and data have greatly constrained the present effort; and, the event it represents a preliminary probing based essentially en trade statistics for one year - 1964. The most useful result of the study is a list of commodities for which there is a strong presumption that trade could be increased among Vest African countries. This presumption remixes, of course, further testing. Partly to indicate the direction further examination might take and partly to place the present study in its wider context, it is useful to consider in some detail the purpose and methodology of the broader studies.
