The Governments of African countries represented by our Ministers responsible for population matters at the third African Population Conference which met in Dakar, Senegal from 7 to 12 December 1992 on the theme "Population, family and sustainable development", have assessed the demographic situation and future trends in the region. In preparation for the International Conference on Population and Development to be held in Cairo in 1994, we have also assessed the achievements, constraints and implications of population policies; the impact of the economic crisis and structural adjustment programmes on family survival strategies and on the ability of African Governments to make satisfactory progress in population policy formulation and implementation.
