The Regional Institute for Population Studies, Accra, which was established in February 1972 can lie said to trace its beginnings to the United Nations sponsored World Population Conference of 1954, where the need for establishing- centers for advanced training in demography in the developing regions and international cooperation in their establishment was recognized. As a result of this recognition and consequent action in the United Nations - ECOSOG Resolution 571 (XIX) - the first Regional Demographic Training and Research Centre was established in collaboration with the Government of India in Chembur, Bombay, in 1956. The establishment of the Latin American Demographic Centre (CELADE) followed in 1957, while in Africa the first centre, the North African Demographic Centre, now called the 'Cairo Demographic Centre, was set up in Cairo in 1963.
