Most societies want to achieve economic development in order to secure higher standards
of living, now and for future generations. They also seek to protect and enhance their environment
to achieve these goals. Sustainable development, therefore, tries to reconcile these two objectives.
As it involves the complex interaction of social, economic, institutional and environmental factors,
policies for sustainable development must reflect and incorporate these interactive forces if they are
to be meaningful, reliable and implementable.
