The new strategic direction of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), places great emphasis on gender issues. With a view to mainstreaming gender in the work of the Commission, it is highlighted as a major cross- cutting issue in all substantive programme areas. This also is reflected in the work of the Sub regional Development Centres (SRDCS) which is the arm of UNECA. The main mandate of the SRDC is to forge an effective partnership with the regional economic communities, inter governmental organizations (IGOS) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in giving technical assistance where necessary and establishing the flow of information between UNECA and the sub region. This reinforces the outreach and networking aspect of the Commission's activities at the sub regional level.
