The SDG7 Initiative for Africa is a challenge that combines scale, speed, sustainability and access to crowd-in financing from the private sector for accelerated clean energy deployment to address Africa’s increasing need for energy, while contributing to climate action through enhanced nationally determined contributions to climate action (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. The United Nations Global Compact issued a call to action to finance the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The call to action urged business, governments and other actors to work with financial intermediaries to raise the financing needed to achieve the SDGs. The SDG7 Initiative for Africa is an example of concrete actualization of this call to action. Africa is thus the only region in the world for trans-formative clean energy deployment, making compelling investment case for the private sector if the enabling policy and regulatory environment exist.
