Dr. Silveira’s bookranked as one of the most sympathetic treatments of the African political process to date. His point of departure is to rightly recognize the African political leader as a serious actor with a vision of society, working within the constraints imposed by the colonial legacy, the class nature of his society and inherited socio-economic structure to bring about his version of society as well as, naturally, to stay in power.
