The study attempts to assess the socio-economic and demographic transition in the selected countries. The purpose is to analyse factors and issues delaying the demographic transition in Africa compared with other world regions, identify the main factors (economic, demographic, social, cultural, biological) facilitating a significant mortality, fertility and population growth declines in Africa, formulate policy and programmes recommendations in view of the need of facilitating the demographic transition in the continent. In the analysis of demographic evolution and its determinants, the paper makes use of published data, mainly from censuses, the World Fertility Surveys (WFS), the Demographic and Health Surveys), and also refer to the results of comparative analyses already undertook on the subject by several individuals and organizations.
