Hundreds of Addis Ababa-based young people from diverse backgrounds, social class and ages, including refugees, those with disabilities attended the launching of the International Year of the Youth and Africa Youth Day celebrations on 1 November 2010 at the United Nations Conference Centre. The event, which was celebrated across Africa, comprised a thought provoking intergenerational dialogue on ways to bridge existing gaps and transform young people into leaders. In his keynote address, Ethiopian President, Ato Girma Wolde Giorgios welcomed the launch, as an indication of a shift that is placing value on youth policies and programmes to boost Africa’s development. He noted that the African Youth Day and the launching of the International Year of Youth must increase awareness and stimulate action. “The support we provide today to young people will adequately prepare them for responsible citizenship and parenthood,” he said.
