United Nations Under Secretary General and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa, Mr. Abdoulie Janneh, was among the first recipients of StatCom Africa's African Statistics Award, in recognition of his contribution to the development of statistics on the continent. The awards were given during the opening of the first meeting of the Statistical Commission for Africa (StatCom-Africa) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In brief citation before presenting the award on behalf of the African statistical community, noted that ECA had historically played an important role in the development of statistics on the continent, and cited the example of the African Household Survey Capability Program, which was launched in 1978 and played a critical role in capacity building in African countries.
