Statement by Mr. Abdoulie Janneh, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ECA at the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development Fortieth Session of the Commission. Mr. Janneh, emphasized on his remark that, recent assessments, including the one that we have prepared for this Conference, indicate that although Africa is making progress towards the targets, the rate of progress is so slow that the region as a whole is at risk of not meeting the goals. He said that as we approach this halfway mark, we are reminded that we will soon run out of time to make the critical investments that we need to make in order to make the on-target achievement of these goals possible. The issue then is how to bring about the required transformation. Africa need to scale up interventions in infrastructure, in health and education, in protecting our environment, and in job creation, and we need to do that now.
