Africa Centre for Gender and Development (ACGD) is developing an index to measure the progress
made to address the gender inequalities and inequities in Africa. To facilitate the development of the
index, the initial key activities were defining the framework for the index as well as reviewing existing
indices. Consultants were identified from the Institute of Social Studies in Holland and the University
of Versailles-St Quentin en Yvelines in France to assist in this exercise. The AGDI will make up the
African Women's Report 2002/2003. The mission to Holland was specifically for the task manager of the production of the African Women's Report to meet with the two consultants to define the theoretical framework of the index- to redefine the plan of action of the production of the AGDI and the AWR; to detail all the logistical ' arrangements and to map a time frame for the production of the index and the report. The meetings in Holland was also an opportunity to set up the parameters for the analysis of existing indices in terms of variables they are looking at, and the limitations and advantages of each.
