Though agriculture is both the largest sector in all member countries, and though it must remain the most important for a long time, it must be realized that there are fewer opportunities for economic integration than in such fields as industry and transport. The reasons are many and require no elaboration here' most production is of bulky, low-value products, largely consumed by very nearby producers; too cheap to bear transportation costs, given the transport facilities. Most of the Eastern African countries produce very nearly the same pattern of both staple food and export crops, there is only small complementary. This study along with other information, can provide a basis for the very detailed work required if significant patterns of comparative 1dvantage, hitherto not clear, are to demonstrated.
