The subject of this paper is the description and interpretation of mortality level, trends and differentials in Egypt. To this purpose, certain factors and population characteristics that are strongly related to observe variations in mortality are included in the analysis. The factors of primary importance include age, sex, place of residence and socio-economic status as well as characteristics of the community. In view of the prevailing socio-economic conditions in the country, one can identify three basic interacting differentials in the accuracy of mortality data: place of residence, sex and age. Reference has been made to the important role played by mortality trends in the current rapid growth of Egypt’s population. Reference has also been made to the various factors which are expected to affect the trends in death rates. Such trends can be masked by various differentials in the completeness of the data.
