The Central African sub-region comprises six countries and covers an area of more than five million square kilometers, or about one-fifth of the continent's surface, but with only a tenth of its population. Of the six, the Central African Republic and Chad are landlocked. The Democratic Republic of Congo contains more than a third of its frontiers contiguous to those of the Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic; it also contains about a half of its territory and over 60 per cent of its population. The over-all sub-regional density of about five persons per square kilometer is about half the African average. Within the sub-region, however, there are divergent population densities ranging from about two persons per square kilometer for Gabon to around nine persons for Cameroon. Within each country there are, of course, marked differences in density. In the Wouri department in Western Cameroon the density exceeds 100 persons per square kilometer in the Boumba Ngoro department in Eastern Cameroon the density is 0.6 per square kilometer. Within the UDEAC (Cameroon, Chad, Republic of Congo, Gabon, Central African Republic) the largest geographical area is Chad which accounts for about 43 per cent of the total area, but only 29 per cent of the total population, whereas Cameroon, with 16 per cent of the total area accounts for 44 per cent of the total population. The five UDEAC countries thus represent no more than 3 per cent of the continent's population with about 10 per cent of its territory. The average density is about five persons per square kilometer for the six and three for the UDEAC, against ten for the continent as a whole.
