This report concerns Customs proper, is a synopsis of the information contained in replies to the questionnaire or given orally by various national services. The valuable information come from the Secretariat of the Customs Union of West African states. The ECA Secretariat takes full responsibility for the contents of the report, apart from those data taken straight from replies to the questionnaire, for which the national customs administration offices are responsible. The purpose of this paper West Africa covers an area enclosed by the countries formerly part of French West Africa and French Equatorial Africa. The sub-region has the highest population density in tropical Africa, but the population is unevenly scattered.
