In recent years, there has been a growing interest and concern on the part of Governments with respect to the important relationship between population trends and economic and social development. This interest is reflected in a widening· of the mandates of the United Nations and of the specialized agencies in the field of population. Early in 1967, the Committee for Programme and Co-ordination concluded, after reviewing United Nations activities in the field of population, that this programme should concentrate more on action programmes at the regional and country levels and that demographic research would be focused on studies which could serve as practical tools for policy-making or for supporting field activities, since such studies were considered to be especially important to the economic and social efforts of Governments. The responsibilities within the United Nations of the regional economic commissions in the field of population have grown considerably over the past few years.
