A retreat of the regional coordination mechanism for Africa was held in Nairobi from 24 to 27 April 2018. The report highlighted the various expected outcomes of the retreat, including discussions on how the mechanism could effectively realign itself to the expected reforms put forward by the African Union, the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Executive Secretary of ECA. It reaffirmed the commitment of the United Nations to continuing its support to the African Union to deliver on its priorities. The work of the mechanism must be aligned with the 2030 agenda for sustainable development and agenda 2063: The Africa We Want. This was particularly relevant, given that the African Union heads of state and government had decided that there should be only one report on both agendas. The secretariat of the mechanism outlined the following meeting objectives: To review the work of the clusters and the sub regional coordination mechanisms for the period 2017-2018 in order to collect input for the preparation of the progress report of cluster coordinators for the upcoming nineteenth session of the mechanism and to gather lessons learned, with a view to enhancing and strengthening the capacity and effectiveness of the Mechanism; To finalize the 2018-2019 work plan of the mechanism, utilizing the tools and templates developed for joint programming; To learn about and have a common understanding of recent United Nations-African Union strategic developments and reforms and their implications for the mechanism; To prepare and approve documents for the nineteenth session of the mechanism; To work on improving information-sharing and collaboration tools.
