What has been attempted in this paper is to create a framework within which the prospects and
potentials of the geoinformation industry could be discussed. An overview has been provided of the
issues and challenges that the geoinformation industry in Africa is facing and what are the possible
solutions. It is clear that international geoinformation initiatives, the development of National Spatial
Data Infrastructure (NSDI) and the development of institutional and individual capacity must be part
of the solution. However, this must happen within an appropriate framework and be properly
coordinated. Research conducted in one of the regional economic communities in Africa has
shown the wealth of geoinformation that already exists. What the paper should ultimately tell the
reader is that although the geoinformation industry is small and has its problems, a platform has
been established to begin to look at the prospects for its future development and the maximizing of
its potential.
