The Regional Conference on Women and Peace which took place in Kampala, Uganda between 22od and 25th November 1993 is the first of its kind in Africa. It was convened on the initiative of the Ministry of Women in Development, Culture and Youth of the Government of Uganda. This initiative was in response to the concerns of women about the increasing number of intra-state wars and violent conflicts in the continent in which they have been the major victims, and in the context of the wider goals and objectives of the United Nations Women's Decade whose strategies and action plan emphasized the need for the promotion of equality, development and peace. It was considered to be an opportune time to examine the situation of women in the process of political changes and the role they play in conflict resolution and peace-building preparatory to the Fifth Regional Conference in Dakar, Senegal 1994, sod the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, Republic of China 1995,
