In many countries of the African Region a good beginning has been made in the improvement of mortality and other demographic data. A number of countries have held a complete census of their population. Sample surveys to estimate birth and death rates have been conducted in most countries of the Region for the first time. Civil registration has been introduced in countries where it had not existed before and at has been expanded in countries where it did not have complete coverage.
