This paper has been prepared to fulfill a request by the 5th session of the joint conference of African planners, statisticians in 1998. It attempts to discuss in relative terms how factors like material and child health care, family planning programmes, ,proximate determinates and socio-economic development influence fertility. Wherever empirical evidence of the impact of these factors on fertility exists, this will be given. In other instances, qualitative analysis will be presented. Section II of the paper discuses material and child health care and family planning programmes and their influence on fertility; section III deals with proximate determinants of fertility; socio-economic correlates of fertility is the focus of section IV; finally, section V is devoted to policy considerations to influence fertility.
