This paper will present and compare fertility rates from data considered to be fairly accurate for different parts of Africa. of all the areas included, Algeria, Tunisia and the small off-shore islands are the only places where vital registration systems provided the basis of the national rates presented.this paper also analysed the implications of the current levels of fertility for development together with the extent of each African country’s awareness of the problems posed by high fertility in their development programs.
